Extra Special Bitter, or Strong Bitter, is the strongest of the Bitter Beer category. Its ABV range is 4.6 to 6.2 percent, not a range that many would call strong. Its malt-forward flavor may also cause some confusion with the term “bitter.” So what’s the deal with this seemingly misnamed beer, and why do I enjoy it so much? Well, it’s a damn fine style of beer, and I’ve spent a lot of time trying to dial in the Strong Bitter style to as close to perfect as I can get. I’m about to try another version of my Strong Bitter recipe. Will this bring me any closer to my goal? Listen as I brew up the batch, and we’ll find out together!
